Feliway Classic Travel Spray mimics the natural feline facial pheromones to help them feel comfortable in their environment. This spray is proven to help reduce signs of stress in cats of all ages that may lead to inappropriate behaviors. This is NOT a sedative or tranquilizer.
For scratching and urine spraying, thoroughly clean area then spray 8-10 pumps of Feliway Classic Spray directly on the objects your cat is marking. Re-apply at least twice daily until the behavior stops.
Feliway Classic Spray can also help reduce stress while traveling or going to the vet. Spray 8-10 pumps directly inside the carrier 15 minutes prior to introducing the cat. Re-apply every 4-5 hours as needed.
FELIWAY® SPRAY
Ceva Animal Health
The secret to happy cats
Helps control objectionable cat behaviors
Scientifically proven*
*The efficacy of Feliway® has been demonstrated by numerous clinical studies published in reputable scientific journals or presented at reputable international conferences.
When a cat feels safe and comfortable in its environment, it rubs its head against the furniture, the corners of walls or the bottom of curtains, leaving a substance called the facial pheromone (see figure 1). This pheromone is specific to cats and conveys a message of security, reassurance and well-being.
Figure 1: Facial marking
Feliway® is a synthetic copy of this pheromone and studies have shown that it reassures and comforts cats, helping them cope with environmental changes or other stressful situations.

Feline stress
It is now well known that feline stress can cause a range of health problems and affect a cat’s behavior.
Common stress-related behavior problems include:
- urine spraying (see figure 2)
- vertical scratching
- appearing withdrawn
- over grooming or decreased grooming
- tension between cats
- excessive vocalizations
- stereotypic behaviors
Common stress-related medical problems include:
- feline interstitial cystitis
- feline psychogenic alopecia
- anorexia
- obesity
Figure 2: Urine spraying
The posture adopted for urine spraying is shown in figure 2. Spraying involves a well recognized behavioral sequence where the cat:
- selects a vertical surface
- paws at the ground
- turns its back to the surface
- lifts its tail to a vertical position whilst remaining standing
- sprays the surface with a horizontal jet of urine
The cat will perform this behavioral sequence of urine spraying:
- during a period of sexual activity
- following an event that changes its environment (see details below) and is perceived by the cat as stressful.
Urine marks produced in this way are characterized by a strong smell even though the quantity of urine deposited each time is usually small. They are found at about 8 in. (20cm) above the floor.
Feline tension or stress may be caused by one stressful event or result from an ongoing problem within the home.
Signs of stress are often subtle and can easily be overlooked in cats, especially chronic stress.
Uses
Feliway® Spray contains an analogue of the F3 fraction of feline facial pheromone and offers a natural and convenient way:

Feliway® can also be used under direction from a veterinarian or a feline qualified behaviorist to help cats showing stress-related behavioral or medical problems.
Instructions for use
Feliway® Spray can be sprayed directly on bedding, walls, furniture, inside carriers, boarding cages or in the car.
Feliway® should be shaken prior to use then applied at about 4 inches (10 cm) from the site to be sprayed, keeping the bottle vertical.

On long journeys, it’s recommended to re-spray after 4 to 5 hours (with the cat removed from the carrier). |
About 15 minutes prior to leaving, spray all four corners and floor of the carrier with Feliway®. Please wait for at least 15 minutes for alcohol evaporation. |
Preferred = The Feliway® product most suited for the situation
Supplement = Additional Feliway® product which can be combined for added support
To comfort your cat during travelling
- Spray 8 to 10 pumps of Feliway® at least 15 minutes before the cat is introduced into the environment (car, carrier, kennel etc.): one spray should be administered to each of the 4 corners, 2 sprays to the floor and 2 sprays to the top of the carrier or kennel.
- The effect should last approximately 4 to 5 hours, although each animal responds differently. In case of long journeys, re-spray after this time or if you notice a reduced effect. Remove the cat from the carrier or the car for at least 15 minutes (ideally placing cat in non-stressful and secured conditions) while allowing the excipient to evaporate.
In addition, for optimal results and to prevent motion sickness, the cat should not have eaten for at least 6 hours, but don’t limit water intake before travelling.
- Re-apply Feliway® Spray before each journey, after thorough cleaning of the carrier.
To reduce urine spraying
- Do not clean marked areas with products that contain ammonia or bleach as cats are extremely sensitive to strong smells. Water, surgical alcohol or an odorless solution should be used to clean soiled areas.
- Feliway® should be sprayed once a day, directly onto the places soiled by the cat and also on prominent objects that could be attractive to the cat (see figure 3). The spray should be applied at a height of about 8 inches (20 cm) from the floor.
Figure 3: examples of prominent objects
- Wait 15 minutes prior to introducing the cat into the treated environment, to allow the excipient to evaporate.
- You may stop using Feliway® Spray once the cat is observed rubbing the site with its head (marking with its own facial pheromone, see figure 1). Where this is not observed, continue for at least 1 month.
- Immediate results may be seen, however the frequency of spraying is usually seen to reduce over time.
- For best results, Feliway® Diffuser is recommended to be used in conjunction with Feliway® Spray.
To prevent urine spraying (new house, vacation rental, new environment or challenging stressful situation)
- Feliway® should be sprayed once a day, on prominent objects that could be attractive to the cat (see figure 3). The spray should be applied at a height of about 8 inches (20 cm) from the floor.
- Wait 15 minutes prior to introducing the cat into the treated environment, to allow the excipient to evaporate.
- If the cat has a history of urine spraying, Feliway® Diffuser can be used in conjunction with Feliway® Spray and should be plugged in at least 48 hours (ideally 1 week) before any stressful event i.e. new pet, building work, parties, moving house etc.
To prevent or control vertical scratching
- Spray Feliway® on each scratched area once a day for 3 to 4 weeks (around 6 depressions of the nozzle per day).
- Wait at least 15 minutes before the cat is introduced into the sprayed area to allow the excipient to evaporate.
- Also provide a suitable alternative scratching area nearby.
To help a cat cope with challenging situations (see details above)
- Feliway® Spray can be used in combination with Feliway® Diffuser to enhance effectiveness, or in situations where the Feliway® Diffuser is not practical (cattery, carriers).
- In such case, Feliway® Spray can be applied directly to bedding or inside carrier, at least 15 minutes before the cat is introduced into the environment to allow the excipient to evaporate.
Multiple cat households
- In multi-cat households, Feliway® Diffuser is the most suited form. However, since the risk of urine marking is greater when several cats are present in a household, Feliway® Spray can be used in combination with Feliway® Diffuser for best results. The application of Feliway® Spray should be increased to two or three times per day on marked sites and once per day on prominent objects that could be attractive to the cat.
Feliway® Spray should not be directly sprayed on animals or near an animal’s face.
Behavioral and environmental modifications may be required and advice should be sought from your veterinarian or behaviorist, particularly in multi-cat households.

Frequently Asked Questions
What pheromone is in Feliway® and is this safe to humans?
The pheromone released by Feliway® is identical in nature to the feline facial pheromone that cats use to mark objects in their environment. As pheromones are species-specific, feline pheromones will have no effect on humans or other pets.
Can Feliway® Spray be used directly onto the cat?
No, Feliway® should never be applied directly onto a cat.
How long will it take to have an effect on the cat? How long will the effect last for?
Feliway® Spray has an almost immediate effect. Renew application according to the situation for which Feliway® Spray is used. Please remember to leave the object which has been sprayed to dry for at least 15 minutes before introducing the cat to the area for excipient evaporation.
What type of behavior problems will not be helped by Feliway®?
If the undesired behavior is not stress-related, Feliway® will have no effect.
Do I need to use Feliway® Spray or Feliway® Diffuser?
In some situations, for best results, you may wish to use both of them (see table above for more information).
What is the most suitable way to clean up urine following urine marking?
The use of rubbing alcohol mixed with warm water is recommended. Approximately one capful in a small basin of warm water (it will turn a cloudy white color and this is normal). Wash the area with the solution and allow to dry naturally. Feliway® Spray can then be sprayed onto the area to reduce the likelihood of urine marking re-occurring.
Can the liquid from the Feliway® Spray be used in the Feliway® Diffuser?
No; the Feliway® Spray is alcohol-based and should never be used in the Feliway® Diffuser.
Can I use Feliway® and ADAPTIL® in the same household?
Yes, the pheromones in each product are what we call species-specific; ADAPTIL® will affect only dogs and Feliway® will affect only cats.
