What is Piroxicam?
Piroxicam is a Non-Steriodal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (also known as NSAID), and is a non-selective COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitor. This product is the capsules also used for humans. Piroxicam inhibits the production of prostaglandins, decreasing inflammatory reactions, which decreases pain. It is used in dogs to treat pain and inflammation with degenerative joint disease and as an adjunctive treatment of various tumors and carcinomas. In cats, it is mainly used for its anti-tumor effects, but with great caution.
When should Piroxicam not be used?
Piroxicam should be avoided in pets with allergies to aspirin or other NSAIDs, history of GI ulcer disease, bleeding disorders, or severely compromised cardiac function.
What are the side effects associated with Piroxicam?
Piroxicam, like other NSAIDs, can cause GI ulcers, bleeding, and kidney damage. It can also cause headache, dizziness, ear ringing, abnormal liver tests, itching, rash, and water retention. It is important to monitor your pet while using piroxicam for these side effects, and for you to contact your pet's veterinarian immediately if they happen.
