How to Order Prescriptions

Description

  • Generic Name: Ursodiol CTablets (ERR-so-DIE-ole)
  • Brand Name: Examples include Actigall and Urso.
Ursodiol is an oral medication containing bile acid that treats liver and gallbladder disease, and prevents and dissolves gallstones. It is also used in the treatment of chronic liver problems. Ursodiol can restore healthy liver function in cats and dogs by promoting regeneration of healthy liver tissue.

Ursodiol is a bile acid naturally found in the body. It works by dissolving the cholesterol that makes gallstones and inhibiting production of cholesterol in the liver and absorption in the intestines, which helps to decrease the formation of gallstones. It can also reduce the amount of other bile acids that can be harmful to liver cells when levels are elevated.

Benefits

  • Removes toxic bile acids
  • Treats liver and gallbladder disease and chronic liver problems
  • Helpful in treating cirrhosis and chronic active hepatitis
  • Restores healthy liver function

How It Works

Ursodiol for dogs and cats restores healthy liver function through improving the flow of bile into the gallbladder and improving the flow of bile from the gallbladder into the intestine. It also reduces the amount of cholesterol produced in the liver as well as cholesterol absorbed from food, which helps dissolve and prevent gallstones. In addition, Ursodiol prevents the build-up of toxic bile acids.

Indications

Ursodiol is indicated for patients with radiolucent, noncalcified gallbladder stones < 20 mm in greatest diameter in whom elective cholecystectomy would be undertaken except for the presence of increased surgical risk due to systemic disease, advanced age, idiosyncratic reaction to general anesthesia, or for those patients who refuse surgery. Safety of use of Ursodiol beyond 24 months isnot established.

Ursodiol is indicated for the prevention of gallstone formation in obese patients experiencing rapid weight loss.

Cautions

Tell your veterinarian if your pet has any medical conditions or is pregnant or lactating. Consult with your veterinarian before giving any other prescription or over-the-counter medications to your pet.

Precautions

Ursodiol should not be used in animals allergic to it or other bile acid like drugs. Do not use this product in rabbits, guinea pigs, or other similar animals. Use with caution in animals with pancreatitis, bile duct obstruction, or inflammation of the gallbladder or bile ducts. Do not give this medication with aluminum containing antacids. Do not give with acetaminophen. The safety of Ursodiol in pregnant or lactating animals has not been determined in all animal species. Always tell your veterinarian and pharmacist what other medications your pet is taking.
